Microcredit for women
Microcredit for Women
5 women, all widowed, each receive 30 euros as a team for the planned business venture: producing cassava flakes – Garri.
Steps
The five women form a team and take on mutual responsibility for the weekly repayments.
Once the amount is fully repaid, five more women receive the same initial support.
What is Garri?
Garri (cassava flakes) is made from cassava roots by grating, fermenting, sieving, and then roasting or frying.
Garri is a staple food in West Africa.

Production Steps
Peel, wash, and grate cassava roots
Pack in bags and allow to ferment
Let dry
Sieve into small pieces (grits)
Roast or fry
Variants
Yellow garri is prepared with palm oil or made from yellow-flesh cassava varieties
White garri is fried without palm oil
Garri Crispy is a crunchy variant roasted in a pan or oven
Usage
Garri can be mixed into a porridge with hot water like instant polenta.
It is an important ingredient in many African dishes, including Eba and Kokoro.
In Nigeria, it is mainly eaten as cereal or prepared with hot water as Eba.
Cassava contains toxins that are released when the plant cells are damaged. To reduce the toxins, cassava must be processed thoroughly.
Conclusion
This project creates new perspectives – economically and communally. With little financial means but a lot of self-initiative, real help towards self-help is created.
